2010-01-15 The State of the Athlete
W.C. Waldron is one of the fastest rising talents at NGBB and without a doubt one of the hardest training, deepest thinking and most intense powerlifters that have ever walked through the gym door. In this well written article W.C. explores several individual factors that contribute to the state of an athlete (powerlifter). Much like the Heavy Duty training philosophy of the late, great pro bodybuilder Mike Mentzer, W.C. believes that no one routine works for everyone and discusses several things that influence this. ...Read More...

2009-12-02 1 2 3 Deadlift Routines
NGBB's Bobby Myers has a PR deadlift of 725 in the 242 weight class at over 40 years old. As with many lifters, Bobby loves to pull heavy weights in training but has had to learn the delicate balance of what is just enough to recover and feel neurologically fresh and explosive vs. overtraining and seeing a decline in this lift. Here Bobby shares 3 routines that have given him results. The first two are directly dictated by deadlifting champions Gus Rethwisch and Tony Caprari. The third is what Bobby used, inspired by these great lifters, to pull his first 700 then 725 the following week. ...Read More...

2009-11-28 Raising Your Deadlift
225 pound John Ridley has been powerlifting since he was a teenager. His build is well suited for the deadlift but he got stuck for several years in the 600 pound range. Becoming a student of the deadlift and learning from deadlifting greats of the past, John went on a 14 month campaign to raise his pull and reach his potential. After over a year of methodical and well thought out training, John went 4 for 4 ending with a smooth and easy 700 PR @ the APF Classic Meet in May, 2009. Here, John shares some of his training ideas. ...Read More...

2009-11-11 10 Week Raw Benchpress Routine
NGBB has had several lifters interested in improving their raw bench recently. One of these lifters, SHW lifter Todd Gralnik, combined several training methods commonly used at NGBB to create a 10 week cyclical bench routine. It includes full range repetition work to build the pressing muscles and promote hypertrophy as well as speed training, bands for accomodating resistance and board pressing at various heights. Todd increased his own raw bench by over 50 pounds using this course. Several other lifters at NGBB have had similar success!! ...Read More...

2009-02-09 Everyone's A National Champion!
Numerous times I have heard lifters complain about the multitude of federations in powerlifting. But, what about the massive amount of divisions within each of these organizations? I wonder if the leaders of these federations have a clue as to just how many divisions they have actually created? Are these divisions a benefit to the lifters and the general health of the sport or simply good business cents?? Quality vs. quantity has been a debate for the ages. ...Read More...

2009-01-09 10 Week "Chain Drop" Squat Routine
This program was originally designed to peak a lifter's competition maximum squat in 10 training weeks. It can certainly be altered to either shorter or longer timeframes following the same basic template. Though this program is based primarily on single repititions, the lifter might alter it to a 3-rep max base, 5 rep max base, etc. for off-season training. ...Read More...

2008-12-26 The Reverse Grip Bench Press
North Georgia Barbell has recently resurrected a nearly forgotten exercise for improving both the raw and shirted benchpress. I believe this exercise, the reverse grip benchpress, can strengthen key benchpress muscles, allow lifters to work through nagging shoulder injuries and train the proper benchpress shirt groove. It is certainly a valuable addition to any type of benchpress routine. ...Read More...
